What's Happening with Broadband in East Sutherland?
East Sutherland is one of the better-connected corners of the Scottish Highlands, with full fibre (FTTP) speeds reaching around 882 Mbps where Openreach has completed its build. That puts it well ahead of many rural Scottish areas, though still within a region where coverage varies significantly from village to village.
The biggest ongoing story for this part of Scotland is the Scottish Government's R100 programme, a £697 million investment with Openreach targeting remote premises across the Highlands and Islands. In June 2026, the Scottish Government confirmed the programme had passed 100,000 premises connected across Scotland (ISPreview, June 2026). R100's LOT 1, which covers North Scotland and the Highlands including East Sutherland, is contracted to reach around 61,000 premises by 2027 to 2028, funded jointly by the Scottish Government, BT and the UK's Building Digital UK fund.
Separately, Edinburgh-based altnet GoFibre activated its first homes under a £105 million Project Gigabit contract for North East Scotland in May 2026 (ISPreview, May 2026). That contract covers hard-to-reach premises across Highland, Aberdeenshire, Moray, Angus, Dundee, Aberdeen City and Perth and Kinross, targeting 63,000 subsidised premises plus a further commercial rollout. GoFibre entered the build phase for this contract in February 2026.
Nationally, around 82% of UK premises can now access full fibre and 89% can access gigabit-capable broadband as of Spring 2026, so East Sutherland is closing the gap but some rural postcodes remain dependent on the R100 and Project Gigabit builds completing on schedule.
BT's copper PSTN network is being switched off in January 2027, meaning any East Sutherland households still on older phone or broadband lines will need to migrate to a digital service before that date.
