What's Happening with Broadband in Black Isle?
The Black Isle peninsula sits within the Highland LOT 1 area of the Scottish Government's £697m R100 programme, the most challenging of the three R100 contract zones. That contract, delivered by Openreach, is building gigabit-speed full fibre (FTTP) across remote rural Highland communities and is contracted to reach around 61,000 premises by 2027/28. In June 2026, the Scottish Government confirmed the R100 scheme has now passed 100,000 premises connected across Scotland, a significant milestone reported by ISPreview (7 June 2026). Where available, speeds reach around 872 Mbps, well above the UK national average of 82% FTTP coverage and 89% gigabit availability recorded in Spring 2026.
Beyond R100, the wider Highland region also falls within GoFibre's North East Scotland Project Gigabit contract, covering parts of Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City, Highland, Moray and other council areas. GoFibre activated its first homes under this £105m publicly subsidised contract in May 2026 (ISPreview, 20 May 2026), with the build phase having started in February 2026. GoFibre's contract covers 63,000 hard-to-reach premises in total, with first connections in areas such as Longforgan already live.
