About Broadband in Aberporth and Y Ferwig
Aberporth and Y Ferwig is in Ceredigion. Full fibre broadband is available here, with typical download speeds of around 847 Mbps, well above the UK average of 69 Mbps. Most major providers cover the area, so there is a reasonable amount of competition on price.
Standard broadband runs over the copper phone network. Speeds depend on your distance from the telephone exchange and typically range from around 5 Mbps to 20 Mbps.
Superfast broadband (FTTC) uses a fibre optic cable to your street cabinet, then copper for the final stretch to your home. Most urban and suburban areas can get speeds of 35 to 80 Mbps.
Full fibre (FTTP) runs fibre optic cable all the way into your home. It is the fastest and most reliable option available, with speeds from 100 Mbps upwards.
What's Happening with Broadband in Aberporth and Y Ferwig?
Aberporth and Y Ferwig are in a strong position by rural Welsh standards. Full fibre (FTTP) is available to the area at speeds up to around 847 Mbps, delivered over Openreach's network. That puts the villages ahead of many comparable coastal communities, where copper ADSL lines have historically been the only option.
Wales as a whole has made significant progress. Openreach's FTTP network now passes over 81% of Welsh premises, representing roughly 1.25 million homes and businesses, with take-up among connected properties running at approximately 50%, compared to the UK average of 38%. Nationally, gigabit-capable coverage reached around 89% of UK premises by Spring 2026, with full fibre at approximately 82%, so west Ceredigion is broadly keeping pace with the wider rollout.
On the commercial investment side, BT announced in June 2026 a new contract with the Growing Mid Wales programme to extend full fibre to business parks across Ceredigion and Powys that were not covered by existing commercial or publicly funded schemes. The rollout has already commenced, and the open-access network will allow businesses to choose from a range of ISPs. Some nearby homes are also expected to benefit as the network is extended through those areas, though BT has not yet published a list of specific sites. (Source: ISPreview, 12 June 2026.)
In terms of alternative network providers, Ogi is the most relevant altnet for this part of Wales, operating across South and West Wales. TFW Fibre focuses primarily on Cardiff and the Valleys, so it is unlikely to reach this far west in the near term.
It is also worth noting that the old PSTN copper phone network is being switched off in January 2027. If you or anyone in your household still uses a landline running over copper, you will need to move to a digital voice service before then. Switching to a full fibre broadband package typically includes a digital voice option.
