About Broadband in Shetland South

Shetland South is in Shetland Islands. Full fibre broadband is available here, with typical download speeds of around 793 Mbps, well above the UK average of 69 Mbps. Most major providers cover the area, so there is a reasonable amount of competition on price.

Standard broadband runs over the copper phone network. Speeds depend on your distance from the telephone exchange and typically range from around 5 Mbps to 20 Mbps.

Superfast broadband (FTTC) uses a fibre optic cable to your street cabinet, then copper for the final stretch to your home. Most urban and suburban areas can get speeds of 35 to 80 Mbps.

Full fibre (FTTP) runs fibre optic cable all the way into your home. It is the fastest and most reliable option available, with speeds from 100 Mbps upwards.

What's Happening with Broadband in Shetland South?

Shetland South is one of the most connected areas in Scotland, with full fibre (FTTP) available at speeds around 793 Mbps, well ahead of the UK national average of 82% FTTP coverage and 89% gigabit-capable coverage recorded by Ofcom in Spring 2026. For a remote island community, that is a remarkable infrastructure achievement.

The headline story for the whole of Scotland is the Scottish Government's £697m Reaching 100% (R100) programme with Openreach, which passed 100,000 premises connected as of 1 June 2026, according to ISPreview (7 June 2026). The scheme targets rural and remote areas that lacked superfast broadband, and the Shetland Islands sit within the R100 North Scotland contract area, the most challenging of the three lots. That contract is targeting around 61,000 premises by 2027/28 and had delivered 35,497 by June 2026, so build work in the islands is continuing. The total programme, including the complementary voucher scheme, has now reached 103,730 premises across Scotland.

On the altnet side, GoFibre has secured separate Project Gigabit contracts for the Scottish Borders, East Lothian, and North East Scotland, adding a further 139,000 premises via roughly £288m of additional public subsidy. GoFibre's footprint does not extend to Shetland, so Openreach remains the primary full fibre provider for the islands.

One change affecting every household in the UK is the PSTN copper phone network switch-off, now scheduled for January 2027. Openreach confirmed in June 2026 that around 1.9 million UK lines have yet to migrate to a digital alternative. If your home phone still runs over the old copper network, you will need to switch to a VoIP or digital service before the deadline.
