That said, the islands rely on the SHEFA-2 subsea fibre cable to connect to the rest of the UK, and that dependency has caused real disruption in recent years.
In October 2025, ISPreview reported that Storm Amy had damaged the SHEFA-2 cable around 1.5km off the coast of Orkney, cutting broadband services for homes and businesses across Shetland. This followed a separate incident just months earlier in July 2025 when a fishing vessel struck the same cable. Repair ship Cable Vigilance was dispatched to fix the damage, with restoration expected by late October 2025 (ISPreview, October 2025). The recurring nature of these cable breaks has raised questions about the resilience of Shetland's only subsea connection.
On the positive side, the Scottish Government's R100 programme has committed £697 million to extend FTTP coverage to harder-to-reach premises across Scotland, targeting 100,000 premises by June 2026 via Openreach. This programme is relevant to rural and remote areas of the Highlands and Islands, including parts of Shetland that older copper-based infrastructure still serves.
Copper switch-off is also approaching: Openreach plans to retire the PSTN network by January 2027, meaning any remaining analogue phone lines in Shetland North will need to migrate to digital alternatives before that deadline.
