About Broadband in East Berwickshire

East Berwickshire is in East Lothian. Full fibre broadband is available here, with typical download speeds of around 861 Mbps, well above the UK average of 69 Mbps. Most major providers cover the area, so there is a reasonable amount of competition on price.

Standard broadband runs over the copper phone network. Speeds depend on your distance from the telephone exchange and typically range from around 5 Mbps to 20 Mbps.

Superfast broadband (FTTC) uses a fibre optic cable to your street cabinet, then copper for the final stretch to your home. Most urban and suburban areas can get speeds of 35 to 80 Mbps.

Full fibre (FTTP) runs fibre optic cable all the way into your home. It is the fastest and most reliable option available, with speeds from 100 Mbps upwards.

What's Happening with Broadband in East Berwickshire?

East Berwickshire is one of the better-connected rural corners of Scotland, with full fibre (FTTP) availability reaching speeds of around 861 Mbps for those who can access it. That puts the area ahead of many comparable rural Scottish postcodes, though it still lags the UK national gigabit coverage figure of around 89% as of Spring 2026.

Two significant public programmes are driving further expansion here. The Scottish Government's R100 (Reaching 100%) project, backed by £697 million and delivered through Openreach, passed the 100,000 connected premises milestone in June 2026, with rural East Lothian and the Borders among the target areas for ongoing rollout. Separately, Edinburgh-based altnet GoFibre is building out its own full fibre network across hard-to-reach parts of the Scottish Borders and East Lothian under a £26.2 million Project Gigabit contract. As of June 2026, GoFibre has connected more than 1,000 customers under this contract and made over 6,500 premises ready to connect, with active builds confirmed in Chirnside, Eyemouth and surrounding villages in East Berwickshire, as well as Coldingham and St Abbs. Further expansion into Kelso and Galashiels is under way. (Source: ISPreview, 11 June 2026)

GoFibre's entry-level full fibre package starts from £22.50 per month for 150 Mbps, with a gigabit tier at £34.50. A £200 switching credit is available for customers still within an existing contract.

One deadline to be aware of: Openreach's PSTN copper switch-off is scheduled for January 2027. Homes still on older copper-based broadband or landline services will need to migrate to a digital alternative, such as fibre or VoIP, before that date.
