About Broadband in Blandford

Blandford is in Dorset. Full fibre broadband is available here, with typical download speeds of around 871 Mbps, well above the UK average of 69 Mbps. Most major providers cover the area, so there is a reasonable amount of competition on price.

Standard broadband runs over the copper phone network. Speeds depend on your distance from the telephone exchange and typically range from around 5 Mbps to 20 Mbps.

Superfast broadband (FTTC) uses a fibre optic cable to your street cabinet, then copper for the final stretch to your home. Most urban and suburban areas can get speeds of 35 to 80 Mbps.

Full fibre (FTTP) runs fibre optic cable all the way into your home. It is the fastest and most reliable option available, with speeds from 100 Mbps upwards.

What's Happening with Broadband in Blandford?

Blandford is in a strong position for full fibre. Openreach's FTTP network reaches the town at speeds up to around 871 Mbps, putting Blandford comfortably ahead of many rural Dorset communities still waiting for gigabit-capable infrastructure. Nationally, around 82% of UK premises can now access full fibre and 89% can access gigabit-capable broadband (Spring 2026), so Blandford sits within the served majority rather than the underserved fringe.

The broader North Dorset area has also benefited from publicly funded investment. Wessex Internet, a rural altnet based in Dorset, completed its first BDUK Project Gigabit contract covering North Dorset (Lot 14.01, 7,100 premises, £6m in state aid) on time and within budget, as confirmed in an ISPreview interview with CEO Hector Gibson Fleming (April 2026). Wessex Internet holds a further contract for Dorset and South Somerset (Lot 14, 21,400 premises, £33.5m) and had passed 50,000 premises across the region by October 2025, with plans to reach 137,000. The South West as a whole delivered 194,750 premises under the BDUK programme to March 2026, the highest regional total in England.

One change that will affect all Blandford residents with a landline: Openreach is closing the old copper-based PSTN phone network on 1 February 2027. Anyone still using a traditional analogue phone line will need to switch to a digital Voice over IP (VoIP) service before then. As of June 2026, around 1.9 million UK lines remain on the old network, so if you have not yet made the switch, it is worth doing so before the deadline (ISPreview, June 2026).
